Abstract

Reviews the book Teacher cognition and language education. Research and practice (2006) by Simon Borg. The book provides an insightful examination of major themes in language teacher cognition: the nature of language teacher cognition, the scope of research in this field, the relationship between language teachers’ cognitions and classroom practices, the impact of context, the processes of pre-service language teacher learning, cognitive change and behavioral change in language teachers, and the nature of expertise in language teaching. The author sheds light on the range of concepts and research tools used in educational research over the years, in order to 'develop a more consistent set of substantive, conceptual and methodological frameworks to guide continuing development in the field'. Overall, the balanced, insightful and far-reaching content of this book provides educators and researchers concerned with these key areas of interest with an excellent set of theoretical and practical foundations.
