Youth Violence Prevention Among Asian American and Pacific Islander Youth.

Abstract

(from the introduction) Shifting the focus to American Asian Pacific Islander (API) youth, the authors in this chapter highlight the invisibility and paucity of information on youth violence prevalence, etiology, and prevention among this group. This is, in part, because of the general habit of including API in the "other" category in most risk and prevalence studies. As the authors point out, many risk factors and recommendations for prevention for API youth are shared across ethnic minority groups, including the experience of racism, minority status, and disadvantaged child-rearing environments. However, there is also a great deal of diversity within API groups, and in some cases (for instance, among Hmong populations) historical circumstances including refugee status create unique risk profiles and must be addressed via focused interventions.
