Abstract

The ultimate aim of most developers should be to create a display such that the quality of the perceived image is constrained only by the limits of the human eye and not the characteristics of the device. The implication of this goal on spatial resolution, contrast, and color is described, and conflicts with other design objectives are identified. The focus is on the characteristics that relate to the physical performance of the eye, rather than the processing ability of the whole vision system. Thus, the discussion is confined to static, 2-D images.
