Abstract

The Dolomites are composed of calcareous rocks, but at the center of this area, in distant geological times, the Predazzo volcanic complex covered the limestones with silicate rocks. The alpine grasslands on silica are described here (an acid substrate at an elevation of 2,000–2,500 m) as well as the complicated situations that occur in the contact zones with limestones and dolomites.
