Abstract

Democracy, as part of sustainable development, is an issue that must be addressed by education. This premise confirms a long-standing relationship between politics and education. This article has the double purpose of, on the one hand, calling attention to the need to renew the idea that education has direct responsibility for the formation of citizens who build sustainable development and, on the other hand, seeks to present how education systems in the region address the theme of education for democracy and the results that this attention has had. The article is organized on the basis of questions. It seeks to provide a heuristic methodological perspective to this analysis. The results show that there is a partial incorporation of current approaches to citizen training into education policy in the region. On the side of learning, countries in the region show an average level of knowledge about civic and citizen education, as well as mixed attitudes in favour of democracy.
