Knowledge-Based Growth in Natural Resource Intensive Economies

Abstract

The purpose of this introductory chapter is twofold. First, the author presents a survey of the debate about growth in ‘natural resource–intensive economies’ and places herself in the literature. Rejecting the idea that natural resource industries are doomed to slow growth, the chapter shows that industries based on natural resource may have been highly innovative, knowledge-based, dynamic, and high-performing, historically as well as today. Second, the author discusses the literature about institutions, organisations and economic growth and sets the basis for the historical empirical approach of knowledge organisations aimed to develop knowledge for mining in Norway. Finally, the used concepts, the definitions, the sources, and the main questions are outlined.
