Position Research Fellow in physical metallurgy of heat treatable aluminium alloys Position no: 12844 College / Directorate / Institute BCAST (Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidifciation) Grade R1 £37,099-£44,263 per annum plus £2,166 per annum London Weighting Contract type Fixed-Term 12 months Main accountabilities: The PDRA will be accountable to Prof Z. Fan on the envisaged activities related to the project as outlined below. In addition, it is expected that the post holder will closely interact and actively contribute to other related research projects in the STEP Al programme and undertake any duties as requested that are commensurate with the role. Key duties and responsibilities: The aim of this post is to develop scientific understanding of the interaction between solute atoms, dislocations and precipitates during thermomechanical processing of Al-alloys and practical thermomechanical processing procedures for significant improvement of mechanical properties of Al-alloys. The specific duties of this post include: • To have a comprehensive understanding of the current literature on the microstructural responses of Al-alloys to thermomechanical processing conditions. • To investigate the interactions between solute atoms, dislocations and precipitates during thermomechanical processing • To understand the effect of impurity elements on the above interaction under different thermomechanical processing conditions • To develop practical thermomechanical processing procedures for significant improvement of mechanical properties of Al-alloys. • To interact closely with other members of the MHS team and contribute positively to the overall success of the STEP programme. • To work effectively with our industrial partners to ensure timely transfer of technology to deliver the impact of the STEP programme. • To conduct any other research work required by the project team.
