By combining multi-plane phase retrieval with a DOE, the amplitude and the phase of a wave front can be reconstructed in a robust and reliable set-up. As such, the method represents an alternative to digital holography as well as to interferometry. The set-up uses no imaging lenses. Therefore no image aberrations or geometric distortions are introduced in the measurement. The field of view is only limited by the sensor size and the resolution by the pixel size of the sensor. Unlike holography, no laser light is needed and no additional spatial bandwidth has to be supplied for the reference wave. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.
