Abstract

In mainstream family business studies, the firm is the main unit for business research and it is usual to conceptualize businesses as single firms with varying degrees of organizational complexity. However, from the point of view of the family in business, the concept of a business group is more appropriate, with its diverse set of businesses, variety of ownership patterns, cross-ownerships and common board memberships, and porous management arrangements (Fisman and Khanna 2004)
