Abstract

Nearly all species of large mammals utilize peatlands to some extent. In large peatlands, mammal diversity increases as woody vegetation increases. Among the known forested peatlands, the white cedar community is the most important. To support the increasing mammal diversity as well as the carrying capacity of peatlands, the importance of natural wildfire, prescribed burning, or mechanical treatment should not be overstated.
