Abstract
Many new technologies have been developed in recent years based on physical, chemical and biological processes capable of mitigating or remediating environmental damage. These include environmental biotechnology, defined as the development, use and regulation of biological systems to remediate contaminated environments (land, air, water). Nowadays this definition includes the development of environmentally friendly processes such as green manufacturing technologies and sustainable development. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
