The fundamental principle behind the use of lasers is based on the theory of selective photothermolysis (photo = light, thermolysis = decomposition by heat). Photorejuvenation of the skin can be accomplished by utilizing ablative lasers and non-ablative resurfacing technologies. Superficial wavelength rejuvenation technologies are more effective in treating vascular, pigmentary, and pilosebaceous irregularities. Longer wavelength lasers induce more dermal collagen and skin remodeling. The various nonablative lasers are discussed as well as their techniques.
