Abstract

The present paper comprises all spp. of the family known to occur on the Australian continent and adjacent islands, except for records evidently erroneous. Keys are included, and a rather complete bibliography for each sp., as well as descr. notes, locality data, notes on distr., etc. The list includes; Gyrinus ahlwarthi, Dutch New Guinea; Macrogyrus (Orectomimus) darlingtoni, Queensland; subg. TRIBOLOMIMUS in Macrogyrus for M. (T.) gouldi; subg. AUSTRALOGYRUS in Macrogyrus with type M. (A.) oblongus; subg. CLARKOGYRUS in Macrogyrus with type M. (C.) reichei; subg. BALLOGYRUS in Macrogyrus based on M. leopoldi and not represented in Australia; subg. TRIBOLOGYRUS in Macrogyrus with type M. (T.) australis; M. (T.) angustatus metallescens. Victoria; M. (T.) finschi minor, Cape York Peninsula; and subg. MEGALOGYRUS in Macrogyrus with type M. (Megalogyrus) striolatus. Discussion is given of phylogeny and zoogeography, with distr. table.
