The studies monitoring information system is an important support to the management of higher education. A survey of a wealth of information systems and their variants has shown that they are conceived without a fundamental message on the monitoring of process states that are developing during studies and are generated by students. This paper presents the information flow, derived from the study process and the necessary administration parts. It provides continuous monitoring of students' activities, important for the management of the educational process at each university. To do so, we have applied the basic PDM systems concepts. Due to the extent and recognisability, we have termed it PDM - USMM (University Student Monitoring Management). The system has been upgraded with derivative analyses models, providing quality data for the management of the entire study process. They have been termed "smart registers", providing an analytical view, broken down by individual students, year, generation, first school, course group and by professors. On the basis of "smart registers", it is possible to establish a decision making system. It enables direct influence of human factors that are important for a successful management of the educational process with students. © 2008 Springer-Verlag London Limited.
