Overview of shoulder approaches: Choosing between mini-incision and arthroscopic techniques

Abstract

Arthroscopic and arthroscopically assisted techniques have become the standard of care in many orthopedic procedures. However, there are still procedures within shoulder surgery that are not amenable to arthroscopic treatment, such as arthroplasty or plate osteosynthesis for fractures. In these cases, minimally invasive approaches are preferred when possible. Advanced technical tricks and tools have been developed to accomplish these goals. Despite these advances, the surgeon must be able to know when to choose arthroscopic versus mini-open surgery or even when more traditional open approaches are warranted.
