We describe the first results of the observational programme of photometry and spectroscopy of the ESO Nearby Abell Cluster Survey (ENACS). The final data base contains a total of 5634 galaxies in the direction of 107 clusters with richness class R ≥ 1 and redshift z ≤0.1. Applying a velocity gap of 1000 km/s, we identify galaxy systems in the 107 "pencil-beam" surveys. The large majority of the clusters observed appear to be real, physical systems. © 1997 OPA (Overseas Publishers Association) Amsterdam B.V.
