Abstract Quality inspection and evaluation is a vital role in producing quality products in a shorter span. Computer-aided estimation of quality products in different fields of engineering is a constructive advancement happening. Image processing is one of the most promising areas, which is applied for quality inspection of products where the challenging task lies in recognition of the object and feature extraction. This paper made attempt to provide an overview of the application of image processing and their methodology with few algorithms that have been used in different fields of engineering which falls under three important phases: acquisition of images, the region of interest and identification of defects. This paper concentrates on applications like construction, fluid flow, thermal imaging, medical industries, fruit and vegetable industry, rock carvings, and other applications. Applying image processing different fields leads to quality products by a qualitative process which leads to a reduction in inspection time and cost involved.
