Abstract

5-HT is an NT and local mediator that regulates many cell functions. 5-HT mediates its effects via 5-HT1-7Rs. 5-HT1DR agonists are used in acute migraine attack; 5-HT2AR antagonists act antipsychotically. 5-HT3R antagonists are antiemetic and have substantially increased the tolerability of chemotherapy. SSRIs, NSMRIs, and MAOIs are used in the treatment of depression. Overdose of SSRIs or MAOIs or a combination of both drug classes can cause a serotonin syndrome. This chapter also discusses the pharmacotherapy of migraine and vomiting based on multiple targets besides the serotonergic system, thus allowing cause-specific therapeutic concepts. Keywords CGRP Migraine Serotonin syndrome SSRI MAOI Vomiting
