Mammals do not generally respond to chemical stimuli in isolation, but integrated with other stimuli. Commonly mammals respond to any novel stimuli, but habituate to biologically irrelevant stimuli. Since behavioral responses are complex, simple and rapid biossays are not always available. HR could be one, but it is possible that components that do not elicit a HR response could have an important semiochemical role.
