The method of smoothing surfaces by correcting reflection lines which is commonly used in the car design industry, relies heavily on the experience of designers and often involves very tedious work. This paper discusses how genetic algorithms can be used to alleviate this problem by providing alternative solutions under suitable constraints set by designers. Strategies for designing genetic codes, fitness functions, crossover and mutation methods, are investigated, with the aim to make the surface smoothing process more intuitive and yet leave designers with a greater choice.
