This chapter first presents the general patho-physiology of avascular necrosis (AVN) of the femoral head. Extensive discussion of different manifestations of AVN follows, including Legg-Perthes disease, Gaucher disease, sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies, corticosteroid-induced osteonecrosis, avascular necrosis in treated developmental hip dislocation, posttraumatic femoral head necrosis, avascular necrosis in osteomyelitis and septic arthritis, and femoral head dysplasia. Femoral acetabular impingement is then reviewed. Sections on slipped capital femoral epiphysis, traumatic hip fracture and dislocation, and apophyseal injuries of the adolescent hip fol-low. The chapter concludes with brief discussions of transient synovitis, septic arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, and synovial chondromatosis.
