Classical Hirschsprung's disease is characterized by two phenomena: the narrow segment and the decreased opening ability or achalasia of the internal sphincter. Any surgical method of treatment for Hirschsprung's disease must thus fulfill two criteria: 1. Removal of the aganglionic narrow segment, including the dilated sigmoid. 2. Elimination of the achalasia (defective opening) of the internal anal sphincter. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.
