Endocannabinoids are endogenous lipid mediators recognized by the cannabinoid-1 and 2 (CB1 and CB2, respectively) receptors that mediate the effects of marijuana. The endocannabinoid system, consisting of endocannabinoids (eCBs), their receptors, and the enzymes involved in their biosynthesis and degradation, is present in many tissues including the liver. The present chapter reviews accumulating evidence that the eCB system is involved in the regulation of de novo hepatic lipogenesis.
