Abstract

Experiments were conducted to determine critical effect of cast iron melt temperature on dross formation. Tables show effect of processing variables on the quantity and chemistry of dross. From these and other charts, controls are possible to keep dross formation at a minimum. Also reviewed are process variables such as pouring temperatures, gating systems, presence of cores, molding material, metal composition, etc. Their contributions to dross are documented. Of interest in view of CAD/CAM are comments upon the casting design.
