Abstract

The present essay aims at drawing a link between the social suffering of the poor, inhabitants of the slums, and the violence generated by the actions of the military, in other words, the State against its own citizens. We wish to study the question of the disrespect towards human rights within the actions of the police against the poor population of the slums, based on the idea of the end of human rights developed by Costas Douzinas. In accordance with the latter's ideas, who envisioned the end of human rights in the 21st century, notably in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks which contributed to a legitimation of the use of violence and means of coercion against the civilian population in general, the present article wishes to study the idea of the end of the protection of human rights within the violence generated by the Brazilian state power with the military intervention in the slums of Rio de Janeiro.
