Describes three levels of fishing in Papua New Guinea subsistence, village level commercial, and high technology commercial or 'industrial' fishing. Fishing throughout the Purari River system is largely confined to the first two categories although the processing plant at Baimuru handles product from the industrial prawn trawl fishery in the Gulf of Papua. The importance of village fishing, both subsistence and commercial, varies throughout P.N.G. although all villagers catch some fish. Fishing and fish have importance in village life in all parts of the Purari and its watershed, although the importance is greatest in the delta area.-from Authors
