Abstract

Biliopancreatic shunt was originally described by Nicola Scopinaro in 1979 as an alternative to jejunileal bypass for patients with severe obesity. The procedure consists of: 1) partial distal gastrectomy in which the duodenal stump is closed (or bypass of the distal part of the stomach), 2) transection of the small intestine approximately midway between the Treitz ligament and the ileocecal valve, 3) Roux-en-Y gastroenterostomy from the gastric pouch to the distal intestine creating a food limb, and 4) anastomosis of biliopancreatic limb with the alimentary limb 50 cm proximal to the ileocecal valve forms a common limb.
