Provides a broad appraisal of measurement issues in empirical research on resilience (hardiness). The measurement strategies reviewed here are based on a compilation of studies that specified a focus on resilience, or equivalents such as stress-resistance, located via a search in the PsycINFO database. This chapter is a representative, rather than comprehensive, sampling of the methods used to measure resiliency in psychosocial research. Having identified the approaches used in such studies, the objective then was to appraise the major types of measurement strategies, in terms of specific advantages, limitations, and precautions associated with each.
