This paper aims to identify competency gaps of software practitioners in Spanish software industry. Based on previous works, where a the description of a professional career and the competency levels for each role in the ladder are depicted, authors perform a study comparing an assessment performed using a 360 degree approach with such competency levels. Results show that certain roles present negative competency gaps and that, in general, technical competences present higher negative competency gaps than generic competences. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.
