Abstract

A self-contained introduction to the subject of dispersion forces is given. The concept of a dispersion force is motivated and defined; and different naming conventions are discussed. The relevance of these forces in various fields of science is pointed out. An overview is given to the different approaches and methods for calculating and measuring van der Waals, Casimir–Polder and Casimir forces.
