Guinea-pig resident peritoneal macrophages had no activity against freshly isolated Campylobacter jejuni, whilst C. coli was phagocystosed and killed. The number of bacteria killed by macrophages always exceeded the number of those ingested, suggesting an extracellular mechanism of killing.
