Abstract

Titanium and zirconium powders did not yield nitrides effectively by treatment under 1MPa NH//3 at 700 degree C for 3h. The addition of NH//4Cl was effective for nitridation of Ti and Zr. TiN was produced above 500 degree C and ZrN was produced above 600 degree C. The average crystallite size of TiN was 8-9 nm and of ZrN was about 12nm because of the breakdown of the crystallite during hydridation and nitridation.
