Abstract

Standard imaging techniques in the pancreatobiliary region using radial scanning endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) were prepared by the Endoscopic Forum Japan (EFJ) Working Group and published in 2003. Among the techniques, the most difficult point for physicians is how to image the pancreatic head region from the descending part of the duodenum. There are two methods, the Pull method and the Push method. The Pull method is the same as the endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) stretch technique, and the Push method is applied when imaging of the bile duct by the Pull method is difficult. Mastering EUS in the pancreatobiliary region requires intensive and long-term training. The standard imaging techniques are highly useful for education. We hope that these standard imaging techniques will be widespread and help to establish effective training and education programs throughout the world. © 2008 Springer Japan.
