Abstract

Stock assessments for anchovy, sprat, whiting and horse mackerel during 1950-1994 is performed. The VPA analysis showed that the decline of these populations, mainly as a result of the intensification in fishing activity, is probably one of the major reasons for the mass development of the ctenophore Mnemiopsis leidyi. It is considered that the reduction of the fishing effort, especially on immature fish, may have rapid effects on the recovery of their stocks.
