This paper presents an analysis on the evolution of the urban expansion process in the city of Ponta Grossa, State of Paraná, examining its main historical and geographical roots, and its most important implications on the current socio-spatial structure of the city. It was found that the horizontal growth of the city was driven by intense speculation in land, made possible by the municipal government through successive expansions of the urban perimeter. This process has affected the values of intra-urban locations and raised difficulties on the land and city access for low-income population, exacerbating the situation of socio-spatial inequality and social exclusion in the city.
