Abstract

Around 40 species of the taxa Liphistius and Heptathela from Asia form the sister group of all other spiders; they are distinguished by several plesiomorphic organizational traits. Only in the Mesothelae are signs of opisthosoma segmentation externally visible through the development of ten tergites. Also only seen in the Mesothelae are eight ventral spinnerets in the middle of the opisthosoma as appendages of segments 4 and 5.
