A survey of the diverse, mainly off-line coupled meteorological and air quality modelling systems developed and applied in Europe was performed in COST728. Main coupling approaches were identified and discussed with focus on the features of interface modules. In this contribution, the possible influence of different interfacing strategies on the results of integrated air quality modelling systems is shown through application examples. The proposed analysis highlights the relevant effects on computed concentrations of surface fluxes, boundary layer and dispersion parameterizations, together with air quality initial and boundary conditions. The demonstrated importance of the interface modules themselves underlines the need for model harmonisation in Europe. Modular modelling, flexible input-output strategies and adaptable interfaces following agreed guidelines would greatly facilitate model improvement and applicability for European users. The large variety of modelling systems may provide rich scientific expertise but also leads to problems in model inter-comparison and joint model development collaboration. © 2011 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
