Abstract

China’s insurance industry has grown rapidly since 1978 when China implemented a reform and opening-up policy (Hwang and Gao 2003), and it represents, at present, the largest insurance market in the world (Shen 2000). According to the China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC) in 2014, there were approximately 300 insurance companies operating in China with total assets of nearly RMB 10 trillion (USD 1.6 trillion) and total values of insurance premium income of around RMB 754 billion (USD 118 billion) (CIRC 2015).
