A very heavy rainfall event in northern and northeastern Tasmania during 27 to 30 January 2004 is documented. Extensive flooding and substantial disruption occurred, and in some cases monthly and annual rainfall records were broken. A brief analysis is conducted of the meteorological factors that caused the event. Also, similar previous events are examined and the value of water vapour imagery as a short-term forecast tool is highlighted.
