Abstract

Breast-related complaints remain one of the top reasons for consultation in general surgery. The most frequent reasons for evaluation include a palpable mass, radiographic abnormality, breast pain, nipple discharge, and infection. Mammography remains the imaging modality of choice, but is often supplemented with sonographic evaluation. Portable ultrasound has become an important adjunct to the physical exam in many breast surgery practices. The utility and application of MRI continues to be defined, as its expense, sensitivity, and specificity cause debate amongst surgeons and radiologists. The obvious concern in the mind of most patients is the possibility of malignancy. Adequate evaluation will typically involve a detailed history, examination, and imaging prior to any operative intervention. © Springer-Verlag London Limited 2010.
