Abstract

Worldwide airline traffic is expected to nearly double over the next 10 years. In this market, all airlines, whether they are start-ups or national carriers, have to develop their own strategy. Externally, the strategy is to gain new customers, to expand flight routes and to offer a reliable and professional service at a competitive price. Internally, all airlines try to reduce cost and gain flexibility to fit customer needs. Also environmental aspects and airport congestion constraints are getting more and more important which have to be considered (see also Airbus 2007). © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
