Abstract

In parallel to the widely known WWW with HTML and Java, ISO and ITU-T in conjunction with DAVIC have developed standards such as MHEG-5 and DSM-CC that support interactive multimedia services-on-demand. Potential users and content providers are now faced with the decision, which of the two platforms to use. Rather than arguing which development better suits the needs of the users, this article presents an architecture and corresponding implementation efforts supporting the coexistence and interworking between both environments. This includes native MHEG-5 clients and servers with HTML-MHEG gateways as well as WWW browsers using Java applets or plug-ins for the presentation of MHEG-5 objects.
