Abstract

Depression is common and disabling. Worldwide, an estimated 350 million people are affected, and in the USA, an estimated 9 % of the population is experiencing a depressive disorder at any given time. Major depression is considerably disabling, second only to back and neck pain for having the greatest effect on disability days. Depression is also well understood to be a major risk factor for suicide.
