Abstract

Myocardial ischemia initially results in reversible regional disturbances of ventricular pump function, whereas most changes in regional function following myocardial infarction are irreversible. After acute reduction in coronary flow, both diastolic and systolic dysfunctions occur. If blood flow is not restored, myocardial necrosis results, and the wall motion abnormality becomes fixed. © 2008 Springer-Verlag London Limited.
