Abstract

Research funding agencies allocate scarce resources through a competitive bottom-up process. This paper analyzes the determinants and consequences of choices made at each stage of the funding process. We build on previous research (Banal-Estañol, Macho-Stadler and Pérez-Castrillo [2013], [2018], and [2019]), and we present new results using a database from one of the largest funding agencies in the world, the English Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
