Abstract

Within two weeks of each other in the spring of 2013, two professional athletes publicly came out as lesbian and gay. Brittney Griner, U.S. university player of the year 2012 and 2013, and first round Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) draft pick to the Phoenix Mercury, announced that she was a lesbian. Griners’ “announcement” was subtle, and did not gain a lot of press.
