Abstract

Fostering personalisation is an open issue in many areas. This in particular applies to the area of technology-enhanced learning. Two concepts address this trend - namely e-portfolios and personal learning environments. Different systems have been proposed to support this kind of learning. This paper tries to characterise and distinguish these two concepts to subsequently classify a selection of six systems according to these concepts. This comparison results in a better appraisal of technological solutions and a derivation of future issues to be addressed. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
