The connection of masculinities with management now has to be understood in a context of globalization. Case studies from a set of interviews with managers in the Australian finance industry yield perspectives on the 'fractal' organization of neoliberal corporations and on the generic character of managerial labour. The uneven gender regime of finance corporations is examined, together with its conflictual relationship with the interests of wives. Managerial embodiment is considered as a significant site of gender construction. A model of three phases in the encounter of persons with the 'machine' of financial management is presented. A distinctive configuration of hegemonic masculinity is noted, with a penumbra of alternatives rather than well-defined subordinated masculinities.
