Abstract

Sight is the guiding sense of human beings. Human eyes produce images which are processed and evaluated by the retina, the optic nerve, and the brain. This process is crucial in order for humans to be able to manage their environment. The human visual cortex can do extraordinary things in real time if we consider, for example, the ability to easily grasp and interpret even highly variable scenes with a large number of disturbing influences. © 2009 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.
