Abstract

Using an induction method developed by Martinec et al., (2003) which was refined by Martinec and McCreadie (submitted) to include satellite data, calculations of the magnetic effect of induced currents at CHAMP satellite heights for a region over the Pacific Ocean are shown. The method generally reproduces the data for the northern hemisphere but underestimates the inductive effect in the southern hemisphere. This suggests that other known inductive currents should be incorporated and/or a more complex conductivity structure than the 5-layer 1-D model used here should be implemented for this region. © 2005 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.
